The shadows grew longer
Then faded into night
The moon was shining brightly
Like a beacon in the sky.
I'd waited for an answer
As the sun was still up high
But as the day grew longer
The question became a sigh.
"Why?" I softly whispered
But the wind stole my words
I would not have my answer
And I wondered if you'd heard.
But silence was the answer
And it was no friend of mine.
Leaving me ponder
All these questions in my mind.
It was then the waves had settled
With a ship adrift on the sea
The sails limp and hanging
For its land that now I seek.
I'd rather be in storm
Then the empty still of calm
At least I would be fighting
And be ready for the fall.
For this emptiness around me
Can swallow my heart whole
And the voice for which I'm longing
Has been stilled with words untold.
